Friedrich Nietzsche
In our O.I. rank of motives, the Telos is the supreme motivator.
The necessary dimensions of the Telos are:
Centrality
Identity
Energizing
Devotion
Unifying
Cohesive
Sacredness
Meaning
Coherence, patterning
Completeness
If someone has a Telos, they are highly devoted to their Telos.
The Telos is the unifying reason (or reasons) for which they do everything else in their lives.
If someone's life could be seen as a solar system, the star in the center of their system is their Telos.
The Telos could be a person, place, thing, or activity.
The Telos creates a consilience of every thought word, and deed that a person experiences, or refrains from.
In many cases the Telos is a large part of the person's self-identity. Often the Telos is synonymous with the person's self-identity or social identity.
Frequently, a person would say about their Telos that they were "born for this."
Usually, it is the most valuable thing they can conceive of.
The Telos is often what the person sees as the most noble, or the most sacred.
The person's individual sense of meaning is rooted in their Telos.
It is synonymous with what many scholars have called the Super-Ordinate Principle
There are times when the Telos is not chosen directly by the person. The Telos is selected for the person by someone else. Or, over time the person becomes more involved with a potential-Telos and it slowly becomes more and more predominant in the person's life.
A few examples of a Telos:
Family
Spouse, a total commitment to the beloved.
If someone has children then ideally they are committed to being the very best parent for the children.
Someone has a sick relative and they give their time and their energy and everything they can to help the infirmed family member.
