Willpower, self-control, self-determination, inner strength.
The restraint side is our 'No' to the bad.
Restraining discipline helps us deny what should be rejected.
Avoid what should be avoided.
The drive side is our 'Yes' to the good.
Driving discipline helps us to pursue what should be accepted.
Approach what needs to be approached.
What action or inaction will help the most towards saying yes to the good or no to the bad?
What should we avoid doing in order to better attain our goal?
We must be disciplined about honestly evaluating our priorities.
Less valuable tasks will be put at a lower priority in order to make time and room for more valuable tasks.
Before we begin to decide what to do and not to do, we usually have to establish our aim.
How? What is the best course of action to attain the goal?
We must be disciplined about seeking and holding our aim on-target.
This aim could be a short-term daily/weekly goal, a medium term monthly/annual goal, or a long-term 2-years or longer goal.
All sides of discipline work the same way in terms of our thoughts, in that they involve a mental movement from thought to action, or from potential to actual. Typically, before we can accomplish something through discipline, we must conceive what is to be pursued, and how to pursue it.
Over time, part of bringing the possible into reality is by creating an order of prioritized goods to pursue, and less valued things to avoid. In other words, a hierarchy of values, or a ladder of priorities, must be created by the individual.
What is the good that is to be pursued, and in what order?
The hierarchy of values will often generate a list of goals with specific actions prescribed by each goal's place on the ladder.
Tips:
Discipline is easier when you're grateful for the conditions and situations that give the opportunity to be disciplined.
When discipline is activated along with inspiration, environment design, motivation, teamwork and identity, you will have a rock-solid foundation for creating a new and permanent habit.
One major difference between self-discipline and motivation is that when our feelings of motivation fail us, the habit of discipline will carry us through. In this view, discipline is an action or skill of the self, moving our life in the direction we see that we need to go.
A young child once told me that discipline means doing the right thing at the right time if we feel like it and if we don't feel like it. I told the child that's the best definition I've ever heard.
